Michael Cera Holding Up “Arrested Development” Movie? http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ArrestedDevelopmentBlog/~3/wGggV2XKBPs/ http://arresteddevelopmentblog.com/2008/12/michael-cera-holding-up-arrested-development-movie/#comments Tue, 30 Dec 2008 14:44:06 +0000 Matt Gio http://arresteddevelopmentblog.com/?p=257 michael_cera_hot25

It increasingly seems that all parties are on track to make an “Arrested Development” movie - except perhaps for .

From Mitch Hurwitz, who is the creator and executive producer of the show, to narrator and producer Ron Howard and much of the cast, enthusiasm for the project is high.

In fact, “Juno” and “Superbad” actor , who played George Michael Bluth, appears to be the lone holdout.

Fancast scored an interview with Hurwitz, and he revealed the following:

So what of the rumors that new dad and shiny movie star are the only two remaining holdouts?

“I don’t want to talk about who is holding out right now because we might still work that out and I don’t want to pressure anyone through the press,” said Hurwitz. “Although I will say that is gung-ho, so there’s a big clue!”

More than a big clue, it’s the big Maebe resting in George Michael’s hands.

Update on Arrested Development Movie Plans from Mitch Hurwitz http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ArrestedDevelopmentBlog/~3/qV_5tCNBkxw/ http://arresteddevelopmentblog.com/2008/12/update-on-arrested-development-movie-plans-from-mitch-hurwitz/#comments Tue, 23 Dec 2008 14:14:47 +0000 Matt Gio http://arresteddevelopmentblog.com/2008/12/update-on-arrested-development-movie-plans-from-mitch-hurwitz/ arrested06aAfter months and months of speculation about an Arrested Development movie, it was announced a few weeks ago that it will actually happen. Movies based on TV shows have become commonplace but it’s extremely rare for a show’s original cast to make the transition. With that in mind, is it realistic to expect that movie plans won’t get derailed and that the Bluths will really return?

Arrested Development ran from November 2, 2003 to February 10, 2006 on the FOX network. The offbeat sitcom follows the dysfunctional Bluth family and features the talents of Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, , Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, , Jessica Walter, Ron Howard, Henry Winkler, John F. Beard, and Mae Whitman. Despite critical acclaim, the series never caught on with a big audience. Still, the show has been a big seller on DVD.

Now that the Arrested movie’s been given a greenlight, you’d think that series creator Mitch Hurwitz would be busy working on the script. Not so. Though he has lots of ideas, Hurwitz recently told Fancast that he won’t get started writing until the cast has signed on.

There have been rumors that one castmember has been a holdout. Both Arnett’s and Cera’s names have come up as possible culprits. Hurwitz says, “I don’t want to talk about who is holding out right now because we might still work that out and I don’t want to pressure anyone through the press… Although I will say that Will Arnett is gung-ho, so there’s a big clue!”

Though Hurwitz has yet to nail down the exact plot, he is willing to tease with a few of the storyline possibilities. “I think in some respect it would have to pick up where the show left off. Maybe the benefit of that would be, if nothing else, just to recap everything. There are a couple of ways to get into it. I was even thinking about a big animated sequence to start. Kind of like how the Blake Edwards movies used to start — to kind of catch everyone up.”

He also says that the movie could potentially be a movie within a movie. In the final episode, cousin Maeby Funke (Shawkat) pitched director Ron Howard the idea of dramatizing her life story as a TV show. Prophetically, Howard responded, “I don’t see it as a series. Maybe a movie.” Of course, fans of the show know that Howard is the series’ narrator and one of its executive producers. It’s likely that Howard will have a similar role for the big screen version.

Do you think will be in the movie?

Yes, of course.

I hope so but have doubts.

Nope, I don’t think so.

Another option could be to make the movie a prequel to the series. That would neccesitate younger characters being recast. Though that option could be a solution to Cera’s not taking part, the size of Shawkat’s role could be negatively affected.

On the positive side, a prequel could open the door to examine some storylines that fans have always wondered about, including the deceased wife of Michael Bluth (Bateman). The series creator says, “There were a couple of areas where I always sort of held back, where I always felt like if I needed to deal with at some point, I could. One of them is definitely that story [with Michael's wife], and who those people are, and what effect that has on this kid. I don’t know if we’d necessarily see her.”

Hurwitz maintains that if, for whatever reason, the movie plans get derailed, the show will go on. He says that his ideas for the Bluths could find a home online or via a direct-to-DVD release. He notes, “It’s too much fun for us all. The fans have been so supportive and so sincere in their fondness for it. That’s really the big motivation to make the film. It sounds kind of corny. It’s not like it’s going to pay very much! It’s a really low budget film and it’s going to be a ton of work, but it just kind of feels like… well, people are so great about responding to this.” Stay tuned! TV Series Finale home page

: A Novel (Hardcover)
by Maria Semple

Former and writer Semple (Arrested Development; Mad About You) bashes Hollywood celebrity, New Age nonsense and struggling relationships in this smart and funny debut. Violet Parry, who puts aside a TV writing career to have a baby and take care of the sumptuous L.A. home of her legendary impresario hubby, David, scratches a seven-year itch with D-list rocker Teddy Reyes. Yet Violet is hardly ready for the roller-coaster ride with a man who thinks only “about my rent and my car and getting laid and staying sober.” Meanwhile, David’s conniving sister, Sally, sets out to snag a rich husband, training her sights on Jeremy, a robotic sports-stats genius with a promising TV career. In one of the most hilarious sendups of New Age claptrap, David figures out if he’s willing to stick around to see where Violet’s wild ride will take them. Semple’s takes are tack sharp as her delightful cast is driven comically and tragically ever deeper into a culture of artifice. Semple obviously knows her turf, and she does an exquisite job of stomping all over it.

Tony Hale optimistic about Arrested Development movie, Boldly Going Nowhere TV show http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ArrestedDevelopmentBlog/~3/j8gLe2mwp9I/ http://arresteddevelopmentblog.com/2008/12/tony-hale-arrested-development-movie/#comments Thu, 18 Dec 2008 16:35:05 +0000 Matt Gio http://arresteddevelopmentblog.com/?p=234 tony-hale_097

In our never-ending quest to collect comments from every cast member from Arrested Development about the upcoming (please, God, let it happen) film, Paste talked to Tony “Buster Bluth” Hale this week. In addition to his recurring role on NBC’s Chuck and his voice work for Despereaux, Hale has been busy acting in films for Steven Soderbergh (The Informant alongside Matt Damon) and The Chapelle Show’s Neil Brennan (The Goods: The Don Ready Story alongside Jeremy Piven). He’s even in a film debuting at Sundance this year with Jeff Daniels, called Arlen Faber.
But no measure of success on the big or little screen will be enough to keep him from dreaming about an . “I want Buster’s hand to become bionic,” the actor says from his home in Los Angeles. “All the cast members, we’re all fans of the show. I want to read the script. I want to see what [creator] Mitch [Hurwitz] comes up with. Who knows what will happen? What’s so great about him and [writer] Jim Vallely is they constantly surprise you. I’d love for Liza Manelli to come back and be my love interest. Stuff like that would just be a blast to do again.”

A couple of hurdles remain, though. “Pretty much, we’re all willing to do it,” he says. “I think it’s a matter of everybody’s schedule just being crazy. After the show, everybody did their own thing. We all had babies. So it’s just tough to pull everybody’s schedule together. And it’s also a matter of the budget and what they can do it for. I’d love for it to happen because I’d love to get together with everybody and just play and have a great time. There are a lot of other factors involved, but it seems like everybody’s excited about it.”

Another project he’s hoping will get greenlit is an outer-space sitcom pilot he did for Fox, called Boldly Going Nowhere, created by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia veterans Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton. Hale plays a robot (named Robot), and the show explores what happens on a spaceship in between missions. “We shot the pilot in November, and it is so funny,” Hale says. “The captain is afraid of a robot uprising and so his goal is to emasculate me. And he does that by—not that I had much hair to begin with—but he shaves just the front part of my head and leaves my hair in the back. And he also gives me a baby penis. His goal is to just totally break me down so I can’t rise up and [take over] the ship.

If that sounds all sounds both bizarre and little bit familiar, it’s just another Hale character getting beaten down by life.”I have a string of nervous, neurotic characters that are consistently emasculated,” he says, “but Buster was just such a man-child. Robot really wants a spine, where as Buster never really wanted a spine. He was pretty content to keep his dysfunctional relationship with his mother and crave safety his whole life. All Robot wants is to be powerful. He’s tired of being emasculated and wants his spine back. It’s a really fun character to play.”

It sounds like Tony Hale fans now have two projects to be praying that they’ll see the light of day.

We had a chance to talk with Maria Semple who is a former writer on . She has just written a novel titled “This One is Mine” and is available for purchase. You can also win a free copy of the book on our website. Maria was kind enough to answer a few questions we had about her new book and about her time on .

Maria Semple will be chatting live Today at 1pm ET on Blog Talk Radio. We would love for everyone to call in and chat with her about her book and about her writing experience on . Maybe you can ask her questions about the upcomping Movie ;-). Click Here to Connect To Blog Talk Radio

ADBlog: What made you pursue writing a novel after being involved in television for so long?

Maria: I loved writing for TV and I’ll always consider myself a TV writer first and foremost.  TV writers are my tribe.  After Arrested was cancelled, I realized it would break my heart being in another room without Mitch Hurwitz and all the other great writers.  It was the best experience ever, one I’m humbled to have been a small part of.  So it kind of forced me to try writing the novel I always thought I had in me.

ADBlog: Does your novel have any truth to it, does it mimic your life or any experiences you have had yourself?

Maria: My novel is filled with truth and mimicry!  But I’ll leave it at that to protect the innocent.

ADBlog: How much of a transition was it going from writing for television to writing a novel?

Maria: Gigantic.  In TV you’re working as a team.  A big, complex unwieldy team.  And nobody is solely accountable for what’s on screen.  With novel-writing, you’re totally on your own.  There’s no network executive or actor or union schedule to blame.

ADBlog: Is there anything you want your readers to take from your book after reading, some possible lessons or suggestions?

Maria: I felt like my job was to get the reader to the end of my book.  Beyond that, I’m happy with anything they take away from it.  A common response has been– “The characters in your book are awful.  I couldn’t put it down.”  That’s a gigantic compliment, and a lot like what people would say about Arrested.

ADBlog: Give us one of the best moments you had working on ?

Maria: There’s one thing that fills me with joy every time I think about working on Arrested.  It’s us writers sitting around the big table and Mitch is at the keyboard typing in the script.  And we’re all raucously pitching insane things and cracking each other up and going off on some insane “room run” that nobody expects will ever make it into the script.  And then, in the middle of the craziness, Mitch cocks his head and hunkers down over the keyboard and says (in most cases it was to Jimmy Valleley or Richard Day)… “Say that again, Jimmy.  What was that, Richard?”  And they repeat it and… MITCH BEGINS TYPING.  And I can’t never believe it, because Mitch is actually putting it in the script!  On other shows, there was a very clear division between when you were all goofing around and when you were working on the script.  In Arrested, it all swirled into one.

Oh– I was also very fond of the outgoing message left on my cell phone, in his crazy Gob voice, with “The Final Countdown” playing in the background:  “Hi, Maria has better things to do than talk to you right now.  Leave a message, but she probably won’t call back.”  I lost my phone a few weeks after the show wrapped.  I didn’t care about the phone– all I cared about was Gob’s lost message!

ADBlog: One of the best things about was the character development (no pun intended), did you have anything to do with the development of these character or the path taken to shape and mold the characters into who we all know and love.

Maria: I joined Arrested in the third season.  So all the characters were fully developed.  But I loved writing for them and taking them further.

ADBlog: Of course every visitor to our website wants to know, Will there be an Movie or a possible return to the show?

Maria: I totally understand that’s what people want to know.  Poor , he’s out there promoting Frost/Nixon and it’s all anyone’s asking him about.  Here’s what I know– they’re trying to make a deal for Mitch to write a movie script.  While this in no way guarantees a movie will be made, it’s a huge leap forward from where the project was six months ago.  Alas, I can’t imagine the show ever coming back.  The big reason being it would be next to impossible to make new deals with all those great actors who are probably not wanting to tie themselves down to a TV show at this point in their careers.  If the show had immediately moved to Showtime from Fox, as had been seriously talked about, the actors would have still been under their old contract.  But to get all those people together again from square one– I can’t see it happening.
